Ex-police officer, now Nashville private investigator Jared McKean has issues. These issues include: an ex-wife he never wanted to lose to another man; a child with Down syndrome; a gay friend and roommate who's got AIDS; and a teenaged nephew who has come out of the closet and runs away to join a dangerous fringe of the Goth subculture. If that isn’t enough, now someone is setting him up for a murder he didn't commit...and what an expert fame it is. Jared’s situation becomes even more tenuous as his DNA and fingerprints are found at the murder scene, his voice is on the victim's answering machine, and the victim was killed by a bullet from his gun. Jared works quickly to find those responsible and clear his name but by eliminating suspect after suspect, he is forced to face the likelihood that the killer may be someone close, someone he trusts. Can he get it done or will this be the case that costs him everything?
Racing the Devil moves at a fast pace from first page to last. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The writing is outstanding and the cast of characters is great. The plot is superb showing several twists with shocking surprises and of course a couple of red herrings along the way. The author takes the reader on a stimulating and convincing ride. I was caught up in the story very quickly and found that I couldn't put this book down after I started reading. The story flows very well to an ending that's very satisfying. Very good indeed.
