Quinn's Socks is a children’s picture book written by Melita Cyril and illustrated by Carole Chevalier. Quinn loved his socks. He had so many different pairs of them - and in so many different styles. Quinn had socks for each of the different sports he enjoyed. There were socks for playing cricket, for skating and for cycling. Some pairs were warm and toasty for autumn and winter. Other pairs were perfect for playing outdoors in the spring and summer. Quinn enjoyed mixing and matching the colors, patterns and styles of his socks. When he outgrew his collection of socks, he found a friend who could use his favorite pairs, and he happily passed them on to her.
Cyril’s humorous, rhyming story about socks in a box was written to highlight the many different activities Canadian kids can engage in, and was influenced by the author’s love of cricket and other sports, as well as her hopes for her young child’s future activities as he grows up. Her story shows the many activities Quinn enjoys and demonstrates the joy he takes in sharing with others. Cyril’s story is told in rhyme, using repetition and word play that make it both enjoyable for young listeners during story time as well as highly accessible to new readers who are learning to read for themselves. Carole Chevalier’s illustrations work quite well with the positive messages set out in the story. Each panel is brightly colored and shows Quinn as he plays at home as well as outdoors. Quinn’s Socks is highly recommended.
