Pure Grit: Stories of Remarkable People Living with Physical Disability by Lily Collison and Kara Buckley is an educational and inspirational book to raise awareness of people with disabilities. It is a series of short, honest stories that chronicle the lives of many disabled people, sharing their struggles and triumphs. They range from para-athletes to advocates to CEOS to ambassadors and much more. They showcase many people from across the country and the world, highlighting their unique childhoods dealing with disabilities. The integral theme centers around the characteristics they all share: pure grit and perseverance. Another central theme revolves around the fact that most of their parents treated them the same as their siblings and did not set limits on what they could achieve.
Co-authors Lily Collison and Kara Buckley write with great sensitivity and clarity in raising awareness of such a disenfranchised and often ignored group. Readers will be educated, deeply touched, and inspired by the people sharing their heartfelt stories. Readers come to understand more about disability and disabled people. I learned about their challenges and that they can do the same things as everyone else can, but in a different way. I learned so much about the various types of cerebral palsy. True Grit is a vivid testament that the sky is the limit for all human beings as long as we do not put limitations on our thinking.
