In Punchline (A Rei and Tyler Con) by Bradley Freeman, two con artists, Rei and Tyler, find themselves broke and hatch a plan to get some really quick money. Tyler's plan is to kidnap Arisa, the daughter of a wealthy businessman, for ransom. But they have gone for the daughter of the wrong guy; the man who runs the largest crime syndicate in Japan. Now he wants his daughter back and he will get her the hard way. Rei and Tyler find themselves besieged by assassins, thugs, the police, and more. Do they have the wits to succeed in this deadly game where the next man walking casually down the street could be a paid killer?
This is the most hilarious book I have read in a good while, and I mean from the point of view that it comes across with so much mocking laughter and hilarity, from Rei being kicked out of the window in the opening scene to the narrow escapes and the eccentricity of the characters. Here is a thrilling, rollicking ride that is surely going to make a reader's day. Bradley Freeman has written a comedy that is stellar, utterly satisfying and loaded with fun and action. From the very beginning, the author gives readers a powerful insight into one of the key characters. Rei is someone who easily finds himself in trouble. I wanted to see what he turns out to be. The writing is atmospheric, littered with phrases that reflect the cultural setting in Japan and descriptions that are terrific, bringing the action to life. You will laugh several times through each page. This is pure entertainment, cinematic and deftly accomplished.
