Prospect Hill by Jason Hill is the sequel to Social Hill and a delightful romp that follows the life of Tony. Told in a mesmerizing, unique, and humorous tone, this novel is, in the narrator’s own words, a “tale of a king with a titled crown. My slumdog opera. My neck craned up.” Without his family and wife, Tony throws himself into the streets of San Antonio, a man whose dream has been to publish the tale of his “crucifixion,” a story that has been like an open book to every war veteran. Now, the reader follows him as he rediscovers himself through a serious of adventures. A homeless man, will he be able to publish his book and can he find the one thing his heart strongly desires?
Few writers are those with stories in which readers can find some forgotten part of themselves, and Jason Hill is one such writer. He has succeeded in crafting a story that reflects the finesse of human emotion, capturing beautiful moments in a man’s life and exploring some of the thoughts that steal into the human mind in the hushed hours of the day. Prospect Hill has a powerful main character and the reader can’t help but lend an attentive ear to the seductive narrative voice. The writing is crisp and poetic, loaded with vivid images. The use of humor is one of the author’s unique gifts and the reader gets caught up in laughter at some of the strange things the narrator says and at the way he says them. I read this novel nonstop and felt as though it was a refreshing break from the junk that fills our bookshelves.
