The prodigals finally return from the cattle drive they left on two years before. No excuses as to why a six-month cattle drive took two years. Nor did they give a good explanation as to what they did during those two years away. They expected to resume life as it was before they left, but it wasn’t as easy as they were hoping for. I mean after all, two years were gone with no good reason. And what makes it worse is the baggage they brought back with them. Someone had to try to get rid of the extra bad stuff that returned with the prodigals. Jed was the other prodigal. The one who stayed home and kept things together, helping those families who had members missing. Jed also took care of Ruth while Mike was off doing who knew what, only to find her back in Mike's arms after his return. But was Mike the same man that left two years ago? Were any of the prodigals the same men now?
“Prodigal” clearly shows that we can’t trust people, and in this case, not even people we think we know. As this story unfolds, a lot of secrets and lies come to the surface. The real reasons for the two-year cattle run, and what the prodigals did during those years, and a few more secrets that surprised the community all come out in this interesting book. For me, this story was slow going in the beginning, and it took a while to figure out what was going on, and to get my interest. It did turn out to be an interesting and intriguing story though. Jed was my favorite character of the bunch. His character was different from the others and I really wanted to keep reading to see what happened to him. If you like the old west, and western fiction, you will enjoy this book. Why not grab a copy and see what this cattle-run group was really all about?
