Be careful what you wish for. Princess Casey is granted wishes for anything she desires and the Wizard of Dreams escorts her to many magical castles. Each castle is full of princesses who wish for selfish things, like the best hair, the best looks, and so on. None of the castles, it appears, has what Princess Casey truly wants: true happiness. Princess Casey is on an adventure like no other. Will she find the castle of her dreams and, along with her beloved pug, be able to live in peace, happily with other loving princesses of many cultures and differing looks and attributes all around her?

Mary Ellen Brown Carlson’s picture book story, Princess Casey, is a sweet story about wishes and dreams. Told in rhyming verse, the story is accompanied by line drawings which I assume are left for the reader to color as they wish. The plot explores many plausible combinations of characters (all princesses, of course). There are even mean and selfish princesses that reside at some of the castles Princess Casey visits. The story is playful and full of interesting characters and situations that will both amuse and entertain the young reader. Princess Casey’s quest is like any little girl’s quest: seeking the perfect, happily-ever-after home full of goodness, kindness, and lots of love and fun. The quest leads the princess and the reader through experiences of uncertainty and sometimes fear as it becomes increasingly uncertain as to whether or not such a perfect castle (home) even exists. Full of multicultural characters and settings, this story will spark interesting coming of age type of questions and discussions.
