Preying On The Church by Kimberley B. Jones is a dramatic novel about a woman going through a crisis of faith following the death of her son. Margie Johnson is a middle-aged African American woman who regularly attends the Rockford Baptist Church. Apart from her job as a real estate agent, Margie presides over the town council, doing her part as a key member of the local community. But her life turns upside down when a young member of a hate group known as The White Royals goes off on a shooting spree at her church, leaving several attendees dead, including her son Jason. Following the incident, Margie loses her faith in God and starts to drown her sorrows in alcohol, causing her to fall into a depressive spiral. Will she regain her faith?
Preying On The Church is an absorbing slice-of-life story that will appeal to Christians and non-Christians alike. Author Kimberley B. Jones explores universal themes of loss, addiction, and a crisis of faith, making the story accessible and engaging to all. The narrative starts as somewhat of a slow burn, but it picks up speed significantly after the first fifty pages. Margie is a riveting protagonist, and her descent into alcoholism and depression as a grieving mother breaks your heart. The portrayal of her relationship dynamic with her husband, Barry, as she battles alcoholism felt real and compelling. If you want a realistic depiction of grief and loss through a well-told story, Preying On The Church is the book for you.
