Peter M. Bollington’s novel, President Citizenfarm; The USA in 2116, brings us to a future where the wealthy ruthlessly runs what used to be known as the United States of America. Scourged by the 21st Century Resource Wars, World War 3, and the 2nd US Civil War that destroyed about half its population and territory; it is a country where the right to bear arms is non-existent and baseball is deemed as a terrorist activity. It is physically divided into the City, built out of cement and the Domenicon, which have retained a bit of the natural world. As a covert project instigated by the wealthy and powerful Jackson Deepcliff goes underway, a fire of discontent spreads among the impoverished people living in hutches in the City and the rebellious inhabitants of Domenicon which, as reporter Sebastian Barnes finds out, is fanned in baseball stadiums now turned into museums. General LeMayhem moves to quell the rebellion and the country hangs in a delicate balance.
In President Citizenfarm: The USA in 2116, the United States of America is taken over by the wealthy oligarchs and they will do everything to stay in power. Peter Bollington does not pay too much attention to technological wonders as is usual in many futuristic novels. Instead, he dwells on the psychological, moral and philosophical dynamics of a society that has gone mad. Imagine a world where life expectancy is determined by the state and the game of baseball is outlawed, a world where smiling in the streets is strictly prohibited and money rules everything. What makes it really frightening is that it reveals the true dangers facing our society today. This book is an incredible insight into a world that is taken over by the profit hungry multinationals and it is definitely not a pretty sight. Bordering on the satirical, it is not your usual doomsday fare. Sometimes harrowing and many times humorous- President Citizenfarm is definitely a delightful dystopian novel.
