A cryptic text hits Carol Andrews’ inbox, and she finds herself spearheading a memorial service for a schoolmate she barely knew from her private school. As Politics Can Be Murder unfolds, we discover that the woman was the victim of a hit-and-run, and Carol – an unapologetic amateur sleuth – soon is on the trail of the killer. Along the way, she is drafted into the political campaign of a high profile (and highly-strung) bakery owner, all the while getting advice from gal pals as well as admonishment from her exasperated husband and even from her high school teacher, the unyielding nun who kicked off the adventure by asking Carol to plan the memorial in the first place. This novel is the ninth in the Baby Boomer series by Susan Santangelo.
Politics Can Be Murder can easily be read in one sitting, the storyline is relaxed, and Carol is a likable character with quirks that will resonate with readers of a certain age. Those who enjoy books by Susan Santangelo will find themselves in familiar surroundings and can settle in for a satisfying read. Dog lovers will find themselves uplifted by Carol’s four-legged pals, Lucy and Ethel, and root for the humorous resolution of the canine subplot. Though part of a series, this book easily stands alone and can certainly spark interest to find out more about Carol and her unpredictable world. This book blends a cozy mystery with comedy and even throws in the bonus of a delicious-sounding recipe at the end.
