Planet of the Eggs: Cracked Open is written and illustrated by Peggy Bechko and Charlene Brash-Sorensen. In the story, Eight Hooter is the guardian and mentor in charge of bringing the Eggs of Prophecy to safety in Tree City. The Eggs must remain un-cracked, with the delicate shells that cover an assortment of egg-babies whole as they travel to Tree City.
Along the journey, Eight Hooter and the Eggs encounter Blood Blink, a forest snake and antagonist of the story. A conflict ensues in the debate over which character is more dangerous to the Eggs: an egg-eating snake or an egg-eating owl. Throughout the story, the Eggs are in constant conversation regarding their circumstances as they remain confused as to their adventure. Basically they do not want to be involved in this dangerous venture and would rather find their families. But Eight Hooter prevails and continues to encourage the Eggs that this is their purpose in life.
Planet of the Eggs: Cracked Open is the first in what appears to be a planned series of illustrated stories that focus on the eggs of prophecy. I think the colors and vividness of the illustrations will attract the most reluctant reader, while such character names as Skink are sure to elicit a chuckle from children as well as adults. Very reminiscent of the popular graphic novel, the story offers moments of adult humor in an otherwise children’s story. I enjoyed the literary sound effects, most especially Eight Hooter’s Skree!
