Pip the Possum by Meagan Fisher is the delightful story of Pip the Possum who lived in a forest and was always happy. He was different from the other possums, though; he could not hang upside down from a tree. His entire family tried to teach him how to hang from his tail, but Pip couldn’t do it. Pip’s family slept in a nearby tree and Pip flopped down under a bush as he could not make his tail curl around the tree branch. Pip woke up the next morning to the sound of hissing and he saw a snake next to Anthony on the tree. He struck the snake with his long tail and he told his family about what he did. Something changed after that and what could it be?
The story is charming and Pip is adorable, and kids will love him. The story conveys a cute message of how being different can be helpful at times. Here readers get to see how Pip could scare away the snake because of his straight, long tail. The illustrations are wonderful and they breathe life into the scenes and characters for readers. It is a good bedtime storybook and parents and grandparents can read it out to their kids and grandkids at night. The story can also be used for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. The story is encouraging to all children who are different from others and teaches them to accept themselves and be happy with who they are.
