In his sophomore novel, Pres Maxon sweeps the reader into high jinks and mystery the moment the story of Pigeon begins. We are introduced to Luc Martin, a French busboy working at his parents’ bakery. Luc isn’t a fan of change, he likes things the way that he likes them. So when he sees a pigeon loitering at his place of business, you’re darn-tootin' sure that he’ll chase it away because Luc is not a fan of pigeons; pigeons carry germs! Unbeknownst to Luc, a man with a fedora is about to offer him two million euros… but only because the man thinks that Luc is the world’s greatest detective.
The cover of Pigeon seems totally wacky without any context; it’s a pigeon with a guy’s head on a white backdrop. It gives away nothing, though at the same time just that much tells readers what to expect in this absurdly comical detective novel. Pigeon is a delightfully light read; it is something easy to pick up and get lost in without feeling the need to put it back down. I found myself constantly laughing with every turn of the page. You will not find the traditional mystery here, but you will find a cast of idiosyncratic and eccentric characters. Maxon lets his imagination run amok, his writing oozes with humor and flows with ease and, because of this, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Pigeon. Sometimes we need a fun book to remind us that the world is not always as it seems.
