Permafrost by Melissa Irene Burrowes is a brilliant contemporary fable where humans and talking animals join forces to create an investigative story that will make the world listen. In the heart of Vaharis, Governor Victor Ulrich watches the evening news about a wildlife convention. It bothers him because he is trying to cover up a poaching ring. In the public eye, he intends to initiate proceedings to get the Arctic fox delisted and officially crown it as a wildlife success story. But TV reporter Samantha West and cameraman Dave Candid will stop at nothing to uncover the truth. With the help of their cat Geronimo, two Arctic foxes on the run, and an anonymous source, Samantha and Dave will unearth a sinister poaching plot and the influential people involved—a story that will receive the highest ratings ever in their network’s history.
The animals in Permafrost may well be representatives of humans themselves. As Melissa Irene Burrowes has given them the capacity for independent thought, they become a powerful driving force upon which the story’s ecological message is built. It is fundamentally a tale about the environment and survival. It operates in a similar framework as that of Watership Down. Permafrost is a beautiful fantasy experience that still manages to bring you back to reality as it illustrates the perils and joys of living in the wild. It has vivid and evocative prose that reflects Burrowes’s passion for the subject. Permafrost is a brilliant tale that is empathetic and will make you feel sensitive about the other creatures that coexist with us in this home we call Earth.
