Penny the Red Panda, written by Peter Wynn and illustrated by Aisyatur Rosyadah, is a delightful picture book describing the yearning of Penny, a red panda, to go out to play. However, her mother insists that she finish her chores first. After making her bed, putting her toys away, and sweeping the floor clean, she decides to help with the rest of the house as well. Whether Penny gets her wish fulfilled is shown by the end of the book (no spoilers here!). Penny is shown to be a cheerful and hard worker who readily helps her Mom, thus setting a good example for all other little red pandas (read girls/boys) out there.
I loved the directness of Peter Wynn’s and Aisyatur Rosyadah’s Penny the Red Panda. Not a word is wasted in this bright and cheerful text. Partly written in rhyme, the picture book should appeal to any preschooler who loves animals. The sentence structure and vocabulary used are age-appropriate. Although the educational message is clear (work before pleasure), the fun element is there, too. Any young reader having this book read to them should be able to relate to the central character with ease. By making the protagonist an animal, the book has become acceptable to a diverse range of children. The size of the red panda makes such an animal particularly appropriate for a home setting, as it is roughly the size of a domestic cat, though with a longer body. A fun book, with loads of merit, Penny the Red Panda deserves to be a winner.
