Pengwee's Breath by Debbie Nutley is an empowering story for kids. Pengwee is a cute little penguin. He and his mom are getting ready to attend the yearly Ice Festival, which has lots of games and rides. Pengwee is excited although his tummy gets a little upset thinking about the scary rides that are there. His mom encourages him to practice taking a few deep breaths to calm himself. She explains to him the proper technique of breathing in through your nose and gently exhaling through your mouth. Then it's time to head to the festival and meet up with his friend, Ruby, who wants to go on a big scary ride. Will Pengwee be able to join her?
Debbie Nutley's Pengwee's Breath is an enchanting story that includes a simple, practical exercise that kids can use to calm themselves. Nutley has included gentle humor by labeling this breathing as a Superpower Breath. Pengwee even imagines himself with a cape! The illustrations by Alexandra Rusu showcase the icy blue world where Pengwee lives. Pengwee is easily identified by his perky, orange knitted hat. Rusu captures his serene face as he practices his Superpower Breath. Nutley has done a great job writing an engaging story for kids that also demonstrates a memorable technique for kids to use when they are anxious. Pengwee is such a delightful character that I hope this is the first of many stories about him. The book is an absolute joy, full of fun and positivity.
