Paws in the Action by Max Parrott is the first book in the Jaz and Luffy Cozy Mystery series. The small town of Blackwood Cove is secluded and small so when a body is discovered, this small town is shaken to its core. Jasmine Moore believes there's more to what happened but when everyone else seems to believe what's on the surface, she knows it's up to her to dig deeper if the truth is going to be found. Thankfully, Jasmine isn't acting alone. Her best friend is a loyal companion at her side. Her dog Luffy is quick to lend a helping paw and has an opinion on everything. Together they make an unstoppable and humorous duo.
The story takes place within a quaint town that's secluded and has an oasis feel in that it's a happy community and isolated from any danger, which makes a death a shake-up to the town. The idea of community is at the root of the story with a lesson subtly woven into the plot. Jasmine is a driven character with a determination that guides her and a curiosity that sends her on a journey to uncovering the truth. Jasmine's intuition tells her there's more to the death than meets the eye and this feeling is the catalyst that pushes her to become a sleuth. Max Parrott embraces the idea of man's best friend and adds a comedic twist.
The story has a Nancy Drew style to it in how Jasmine is a teenage girl that decides to figure out the murder on her own and show up the cops when she solves it. Luffy is Jasmine's primary ally and he also happens to be her dog who talks to her. It's a quirky aspect of the story that creates built-in humor with Luffy's talking status simply accepted and everyone knows that Jasmine and her dog communicate with each other. Luffy is also a great source of comic relief with dog jokes that add a lighthearted quality to the story. The story is fun and upbeat with a mystery that's intriguing, engaging, and is perfectly fitted to the witty duo of Luffy and Jasmine. Paws in the Action by Max Parrott is funny, charming, lighthearted, and has a talking dog.
