Passage at Delphi: A Novel of Spartan Valor by A. K. Patch takes us to ancient times via a modern events. When a terrorist attacks modern Greece, Apollo the god of the sun and prophecy foresees the collapse of the western world as we know it. To stave this off, he picks a husband and wife team to go back in time at the height of conflict between Greece and Persia so they can learn of the past and help to change the future. The adventure brings them to a point where they struggle not only for their lives but for their marriage to remain intact.
What a ride this book turned out to be; it truly was non-stop from the first page until the very last and I want more! I am so glad this is the first book in the series. Lauren and Zack are characters that you can sink your teeth into and feel connected with. They are well-to-do college professors when the story starts out but they quite literally get thrown into the deep end of a historical fight of titanic proportions. I would like to see anyone I know (including me) handle things as well as they did if so suddenly put into the ancient world.
The writing of this book is really engaging and it keeps you going eagerly from each moment to the next. What I love best about the way this is written with the ebb and flow of the story line is, while time travel and changing history are very super-human feats, Lauren and Zack have very human problems that they deal with in the midst of all of this. Ever a reminder that even in extraordinary times humans are still very human.
