Pankyland by John Hope is an adventure story for young adults. Panky had the dubious honor of being named after a Florida theme park, Pankyland. On his eleventh birthday, his family and their neighbours, the Derbers, all go to the theme park. The two families are rivals and there is no love lost between Panky and the Derbers’ son Benji, a boy who always has to be better at everything. The families split up when they get to the park and Benji, Panky, and his little brother Craig head off to the shooting gallery. Craig goes missing and Panky and Benji have to work together to find him before their parents realise he has gone. From chasing a group of bullies to getting chased by the security at the park, the boys find themselves having an adventure they never dreamed of, but the biggest fear on Panky’s mind is whether they will make it out alive or not. And can the boys ever be friends or will they forever be against each other?

Pankyland by John Hope is a surprisingly good adventure story, ideal for children and young adults alike. It is written in very easy to follow language, is very clear and has a well-developed plot. There are plenty of twists and turns that will hold the reader to the story and plenty of action, right from the first page. The story is well suited to the genre and the audience it is aimed at and the characters are developed naturally as the story goes on. I like that we find out more about the characters throughout the story rather than having it all come out at the beginning. Enjoyable story, I look forward to more.
