“I had never, until this second, considered what it says about a man when he has literally been thrown out of hell.” – Merlin, from the sequel Out of Time: Book 3, Merlin Chronicles by Daniel Diehl. Demon dragons threw Merlin out of their hellish realm after he fell through their portal while fighting Morgana le Fey. He revisits Jason and Beverley Carpenter, requesting their help to change historical events in Arthurian times. They return to King Arthur’s kingdom and Jason teaches Arthur’s unskilled, ale drinking soldiers military tactics when Saxons invade, and builds weapons to kill the dragons Morgana summons to attack humans. Merlin wants to steal Morgana’s scrolls so that he can prevent future disasters, but vindictive Morgana and her psychotic son, Mordred, are spying on King Arthur’s domain, plotting its downfall. Will the future ever be the same again?
Out of Time: Book 3, Merlin Chronicles is an engaging, action-filled fantasy by Daniel Diehl. I read the entire series and was never disappointed because the author is an excellent storyteller, one who weaves adventurous plots with amazing twists he seems fond of including. The story is descriptive, giving historical insight into life in medieval times compared to its present one, with references to real places and notable names. The battles are graphic with good visuals, but there are also many entertaining scenarios. Vivian, the Lady of the Lake, is lovable with her ditsy personality, and Merlin is a man for all times. Fantasy lovers will enjoy this novel.
