Who among us wouldn’t want to experience our fantasies as reality? At least on the surface that’s what many of us long for. But in Kevin Kauffmann’s new work, Ouroboros, many users of the new designer drug, Escape, find that what they thought they were looking for wasn’t in fact what they wanted. The story begins with Jeremy, a teenager using Escape to create new worlds for himself, worlds in which he can create and manipulate the relationships he thinks he wants. Marc, the creator of Escape, is desperate to see the love of his life again, and is willing to do just about anything, even it means succumbing entirely to the drug, as did his love. And finally, Lynn Stafford, a Congresswoman desperate for a popular cause to champion, thinks she’s found it when a child’s death is tied to the use of Escape - she’s ready to do battle against it, even if she ignores her own son who needs her desperately.
Kevin Kauffman’s inventive and creative new novel is a revelation of excellent prose and imaginative story-telling. I would highly recommend Ouroboros to any reader of fiction, but especially those who enjoy reading works with a social bent that will provoke questions about current youth culture and political intrigue. This book is intelligent, interesting, and will keep you turning the pages until the very end. I highly recommend this book to any reader looking for a well-crafted and ingenious novel, one that will keeping you thinking long after the last page is read.
