Oscar the Orange Octopus by RT Errill revolves around the charming octopus, Oscar, who introduces himself to readers by saying that although he has eight arms and no legs, he is sad that he does not have fingers and toes. He finds his way around the place by swimming and he wiggles his arms behind him to move forward. His eyes are big and his nose is very tiny. Oscar is curious to learn about others – how many eyes they have, whether their nose is big or small, what they like to eat, and whether they are tall or short.
Oscar’s skin color is orange and he is the only orange octopus living in the great big blue sea! He is one of a kind. Since Oscar lives in the sea, he is curious to know how to walk and run and what can be done for fun. Oscar knows that the only way he can find out and learn about others is if they become friends with him. Oscar wants friends and he promises to be a good friend. Who wants to become friends with Oscar the Octopus?
The story conveys a beautiful message of friendship and Oscar the Octopus is adorable. Though he is different from others, Oscar is blessed and that is another message that is conveyed through the story. The illustrations are colorful and delightful and they breathe life into the action and characters, and give a good pace and movement to the story. It is a good bedtime storybook for children and can be used for interactive sessions in classrooms and school libraries.
