Pride is deadly, and it kills happiness. In One Step to Happiness, Ken W. Davies first deals with pride, how to detect it, and how to eradicate it before explaining happiness. The chapter on recognizing pride has an extensive list of questions to help us identify pride within ourselves. Too often, pride hides from us even when we are guilty of being proud. Church splits are often rooted in the sin of pride. The consequences of pride are myriad and destructive. Pride, as seen in Satan, even split heaven, causing a third of the angels to become demons. Contrast all this pride with the humility seen in the life of Jesus. Since Jesus is our extreme example, we need to walk in His humility. Since most people are not humble naturally, we must learn to follow Christ and take on His humility.
After spending most of One Step to Happiness on pride, Ken W. Davies deals with what humility is. Unfortunately, pride is deceptive, and humility is elusive. Too many people tend to be proud of their humility, not realizing that being proud of their humility is still pride. Humility is not about us but about God. Ken wrote, “Humility lives to serve God and give Him pleasure.” However, there are many barriers to achieving humility and Ken devotes an entire chapter to them. The proud see all the negative consequences of being humble. Still, the humble understand that the positive relationship with Jesus more than compensates for any hostile reception. There is a significant need for servant-leaders in the church and the world today. I highly recommend reading this book to help you on your journey to happiness and joy, which comes through humility.
