One Quarter Villain by Cori Cooper will appeal to young adult fans of urban fantasy, romance, and adventure. Maddy Hutton turns seventeen and gets an unusual present from her Grams for her birthday. It's a DNA test showing that Maddy is a twenty-five percent villain. But how can it be? Maddy is a good girl, never breaking any rules. Maddy starts getting messages from an unknown organization, and a mysterious woman tries to meet with her. The Villain Detection Agency, or VDA, urges her to take a test that seems like a joke to Maddy and her best friend, Leo Romano. Leo takes the test and goes missing the next day. As Grams reveals a startling secret, Maddy vows to find and bring Leo back.
Cori Cooper's One Quarter Villain is about self-discovery. The author narrates this compelling story from Maddy's point of view, and we closely follow every nuance of her transformative journey. Cooper encourages us to see classic fairy tales in a new light and conveys their timeless wisdom with sparkling humor. Yet, it is a coming-of-age story with a moral. The author warns young adult readers against being judgmental and inspires them to show more kindness to others. The characters are lovable and profound. Maddy fearlessly rushes into an unknown and possibly dangerous territory to rescue her best friend. It is a pivotal moment for Maddy, triggering her inner change. A teasing mystery surrounds Leo. The development of these two characters drives the engaging narrative. I appreciate the unique world-building and the hilarious twist at the end.
