Once in A Lifetime Dog is the touching story of Chantelle Hildreth’s dog Boris who for years was by her side. Having had that special bond with a very special dog, I was immediately taken by this lovingly written memoir. Many dog lovers never tire of reading stories about dogs and their people, and this book is a nice addition to the abundance of stories available for those who find comfort and peace in reading about another person’s experience with love and loss.
While Chantelle’s writing was a bit amateurish at times, I found that the book as a whole flowed quite nicely. It reads fast and is well organized. Chantelle lets the reader into her life not only sharing her love for Boris, but also sharing her personal struggles. Through it all Boris was always loving and comforting her. I found myself not just interested in Boris, but I wanted to keep reading to find out how Chantelle was coping and what was going to happen in her life. I was very moved by this story and by the love of this big dog Boris. As a side note, the pictures of Boris that are throughout this book added so much to the story. Chantelle’s selection of photos made me laugh and gave me a lump in my throat. This book would not have been what it was without seeing all the sides of Boris’s sweet personality.
Overall, Once in A Lifetime Dog is a book that holds a lot of promise for dog lovers. This book will have a special place on my bookshelf.
