Of Secrets and Sorcery: A Prince of Lynvia is a work of fiction penned by author Chris Solaas in the Christian fantasy, sword and sorcery, and adventure genres. It is suitable for teen readers and the young at heart. Kyne Goodrum faces more than just the typical middle school challenges when he discovers his family's new home in Tennessee is ‘haunted.’ Struggling with bullies and disinterested teachers by day, Kyne finds himself thrust into a world of magic and danger in his dreams, where everyone seems intent on his demise. With only a sarcastic dragon for company, Kyne grapples with the blurred lines between reality and fantasy as he navigates both worlds, questioning which one is truly real.
Author Chris Solaas crafts a thrilling escapade into a realm where magic perfectly intertwines with the challenges of adolescence. I was really impressed with the narrative structure and the way it seamlessly blended the mundane struggles of middle school with the fantastical elements of Kyne's dreamscape. This sense of grounded realism extends into the emotional throughline of the piece, making everything feel very relatable despite the fantastic circumstances, and this only encourages readers to root for Kyne more. The tension between Kyne's two worlds builds palpably, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as they question the nature of reality alongside the protagonist. Through witty dialogue and vivid imagery, Solaas creates a captivating tale of adventure, friendship, and self-discovery that’s able to cross generational boundaries in a story families could certainly enjoy together. Overall, Of Secrets and Sorcery: A Prince of Lynvia is a recommended read for fantasy fans everywhere seeking something with a deeper message amidst its action and adventure.
