Now That We're Adults by Lynn Almengor follows the lives of Wade and Ian Dakalski, along with the people who change their lives for better or worse. On Ian and Kat’s wedding day, Ian’s brother, Wade, gets down on one knee and proposes to his long-term girlfriend, Jill. Not only does Jill reject the proposal but she leaves him, breaking his heart. At the wedding, Ian and Wade’s Uncle Rick still mourns the loss of his wife one year after her death and tells Wade that death is easy, but those left behind have a hard time of it. Shortly after, their uncle is found dead in his basement. At Uncle Rick’s funeral, Ian sits behind his cousin, Jeremy, and his one-year-old toddler, JJ. After JJ slips on the pew and starts crying loudly, Ian volunteers to take JJ outside. As soon as the toddler stops crying, Ian decides he wants a baby. Both Ian and Kat agree that a baby would be great, and have sex in their car at the funeral, resulting in Kat becoming pregnant. She is quickly filled with regret when she suddenly notices screaming toddlers everywhere she goes.
Lynn Almengor has captured perfectly the trials and tribulations of that step we take between childhood and growing up. Now That We’re Adults follows different people’s lives and the struggles they have, trying to adjust to the balance between dreams, reality, and hardship. Love and determination are the common key elements in this wonderful, realistic (yet humorous) tale which left me wanting to know more and more, left me cheering for the victor, rooting for the underdog, and praying, against all odds, for a happy ending. While there is a small amount of coarse language used, it only adds to the realism of each character’s story. Lynn Almengor’s writing style is impeccable, emotive, and I feel that this book, as a whole, would make a spectacular film which both men and women would enjoy. The book club questions at the end immediately took my mind back into what I had just read, making them such a novel idea. If I could give this book more than five stars, I would.
