NoteBoy is a children's book written by Brian Kagan and Lynn McKay and illustrated by Alexandra Rotariu. Scotty and his dachshund Bentley are unhappy when Scotty's parents go out for the night, leaving his older brother, Michael, to look after him. When Michael was younger, he had been the most wonderful babysitter to Scotty, playing games with him and exchanging many laughs but now that Michael is older, he prefers being on his own with his video games instead. Undeterred, Scotty excitedly asks Michael to play but is shooed away and told to go to bed. Using his imagination, Scotty assigns the role of Captain Splatter to Michael and starts leaving notes around the house, akin to Scotty's version of a simulation game. NoteBoy (Scotty) and NoteDog (Bentley) have quite the adventure that night, with his amused parents able to follow exactly what occurred while they were away with each note they read.
Brian Kagan, Lynn McKay, and Alexandra Rotariu are quite a talented team of storytellers. Oftentimes it is wonderful to think of days gone by when our older siblings loved to play as much as those of us who were younger and needed supervision. I loved seeing an exciting game start to take place between a boy and his dog, and an unsuspecting big brother who had been supposed to keep an eye on his younger sibling. The imagination of the younger child also had me aspiring to see him grow up to be an author, entertaining and educating the next generation. Children with such wonderful imaginations are special and need to be encouraged to follow their dreams in the literary arts. I believe that NoteBoy will interest many children aged five and over and that every home with young readers should have a copy of NoteBoy in their home library.
