In Noble, The Christmas Tree Nobody Wanted by Eric VanTuyl, we are introduced to Noble, a young sapling who wanted nothing more than to become a beautiful Christmas tree like all the others around him on the farm. He dreamed of being decorated and bringing joy to children on Christmas morning. When he realized he was part of the Christmas tree farm, Noble was so happy and knew he’d be picked. As the days went by all the other trees around him were picked out by families, except for him. Everyone would walk right past him and with Christmas coming up in a few days, he felt sad that he wouldn’t ever get picked. Soon he was the only tree left and Noble couldn’t understand why no one wanted him. The owner of the farm put a 'damaged tree' sign right next to him, but Noble knew he wasn’t damaged. Then, a little boy and his dad came and saw that Noble was the only one left. The boy also didn’t think Noble was damaged and called his dad over. Even after the boy's dad explained to him that his top was damaged, the child still wanted Noble. His father agreed and they took the tree home where Noble was decorated just like he dreamed, standing proudly in the living room for all to see.
I thought Noble, The Christmas Tree Nobody Wanted was an adorable and heartfelt read. The main character is a kind little tree that is constantly overlooked because he is different from the other trees. It’s a very relatable subject that many kids can understand. Feeling like you are different and there’s something wrong with you is a painful feeling that kids are facing at a young age. Noble’s story teaches a great lesson that being different is okay and that it makes them special and just as worthy as anyone else. The illustrations are very bright and colorful. They fit perfectly with the storyline, making it easier to capture the child reader's attention. Eric VanTuyl has created an amazing Christmas story for kids. I can’t wait to read more works by this author.
