There’s more to life than zebras. Or, is there? One little boy is so fascinated with zebras, that’s all he sees. He sees them in everything, even the spoon he uses to eat his cereal. His mother understands to a point, but she wants him to show interest in other things, too. She keeps reminding him of his chores, his responsibilities at school, his music lesson, and the book about a baby duck that they never seem able to finish reading together. She wants him to understand and appreciate everything else the world has to offer, more than just zebras. And she keeps telling him, “No zebras anymore!” But, even so, all the boy sees is zebras.
Joan Schweighardt’s picture book story, No Time For Zebras, is a cute little story about one boy’s passion for zebras. All children demonstrate from time to time a passion for one thing or another. For this little boy it’s zebras to the point that he sees the zebra stripes everywhere he looks. The story, told in rhyming verse and accompanied by fun illustrations, leads the reader through the mother’s many failed attempts to help the little boy see more than just zebras and zebra stripes. In the end, after the climax, who has won the battle of wills? It’s difficult to say, but we all must learn to appreciate the creativity in others, even if that creativity inspires zebra stripes everywhere. This story will have young readers chuckling throughout. A clever look at childhood passions.
