No Prey, No Pay by Ashur Storm details the destruction of Port Royal, Jamaica, in the seventeenth century. Port Royal was the place where everything happened. It accommodated activities of all kinds, from whoring to markets, pirates, slavers, sailors, and more. Francis lived and worked in Port Royal, silently accumulating wealth until Adella waltzed into his life. Adella captained the Drunken Maiden ship with her first mate, Torvi, and a pirate crew. They were after a treasure hidden in Africa, and Francis was their conduit. However, Captain Adella and Torvi fell for the charming Francis, leading to competition, resentment, and jealousy. With one mission in mind, they set sail into the unknown. Their lives and Port Royal would never be the same. Catastrophe loomed, courtesy of the Drunken Maiden pirates.
No Prey, No Pay by Ashur Storm is a riveting historical novel that tells a tale of affection, greed, and destruction. The plot was captivating, and the character development was superb, especially the women. Ashur researched a place known as the most wicked city on earth and wrote this book from an informed perspective. The author weaved fact and fiction with panache while preserving an accurate narrative. I had favorite characters, but my best girl was Greta. Such a strong, thoughtful woman and she deserved better. Yu also has a special place in my heart. I couldn’t stop asking myself if Francis made wise decisions because they felt foolish. In the end, no man can walk alone, and greed kills. I enjoyed reading this novel, and turning the last page was bittersweet. Write more, Ashur!
