No Deadly Medicine is a work of thriller and criminal mystery fiction penned by Trudey Martin, and it forms the first part of the Verity Spencer Thriller series. The intrigue begins when central character Verity Spencer comes into possession of a notebook that other people would literally kill for, and is begged by its dying former owner not to take it to the police. Now it falls to her to become the notebook’s guardian and indeed the next target to be taken out in order for some very dangerous people to take it from her, so she must use all of her wits to survive and find a way to get out of the whole mess alive.
Author Trudey Martin knows how to craft a non-stop action thriller from the off, with her central character being thrown right into the fray even from the earliest pages of the tale. Verity Spencer is well developed as an everywoman kind of character, instantly likable and seemingly ordinary. The tests that she is put to throughout the plot are well spaced out to allow a great rise and fall in the action, with the stakes getting higher and higher as more elements of the central mystery and discovery are revealed. The action sequences and suspenseful moments are palpably different and well-crafted to create different atmospheric moments, which makes for compelling reading that feels quite emotional by the time the book is done. Overall, No Deadly Medicine is a recommended read for fans of multi-layered mystery thrillers.
