Belle Brown packs a lot into her latest book, Nia the Narwhal Explores the Christmas Ocean. At the beginning of the book, Brown includes information on sight words and their importance. She has highlighted these words in bold throughout the story. Nia the Narwhal loves to swim, especially in shapes. Her favorite shape is a triangle, which reminds her of a Christmas tree. Nia gathers up all the presents she plans to give to her friends on the reef. As Nia greets each friend, they exchange gifts and share time together. At the end of her day, she travels back home and thinks about the fun she had with her friends. Information on coral reefs is included at the end of the book as well as a couple of coloring pages.
Nia the Narwhal Explores the Christmas Ocean is an excellent beginning reader. Teachers and parents will appreciate Belle Brown's clear explanation of sight words and that she highlights them in bold throughout the story. Ocean stories are always a hit with kids and Nia is a great character. The illustrations by Yoga Ariesta sparkle with life. What fun to be introduced to several sea creatures that might not be as familiar to kids, like dogfish and electric eels. Creating an early reader that combines literacy skills and a great story is not an easy task, but Belle Brown has done exactly that. Nia the Narwhal Explores the Christmas Ocean will not only make a great holiday read but a great any day read as well!
