In the anthology National Park Nightmares by Greg Marchand, three distinct tales of horror come to life, each set within the unique landscapes of national parks. The Sick at Yellowstone Lake details Kang's pursuit of admiration that leads to a fishing trip but is marred by the discovery of mutated fish and appalling symptoms. A Voice in the Glades follows park ranger Megan Woods as she tries to reconcile past personal struggles while encountering current mysterious incidents in Florida's Everglades. Lastly, The Terrible Ape of the Redwood Forest portrays Andre's unsettling run-ins with a creature, triggering a series of tragic events and a quest for justice, paralleled by a hunt for the same by a grieving father on a mission to expose the creature's deadly presence.
Greg Marchand does an exceptional job of having each of his three stories collectively contribute to a total reader immersion filled with suspense, surprising emotional depth, and unpredictable twists. I'm kind of a sucker for symbolism and metaphors, so A Voice in the Glades was my favorite. Megan's fascination with bull sharks, in parallel with the predatory nature of the Everglades' wildlife and who it transforms, was brilliant. Marchand is skilled at the art of packing a big punch in a smaller package, and bad things happen to both good and bad people, whether it is an impaling, a crush turning rabid, or a descent into madness. The writing is polished, and there is a real sense of atmosphere, especially when it comes to the ecology of the space Marchand has us inhabiting at the time. The descriptions are out of this world. "It was a juggernaut. Its eyes bulged. Mouth agape, nose and lips frosted with white, with all four canines visible—a vice ready, a steel trap set." National Park Nightmares is very, very highly recommended.
