Narcissistic Confrontations by Sister Renee Pittelli is a common-sense book about dealing with particular individuals with character disorders. In particular, the book is intended for those who have relationships with narcissistic and psychopathic people. The author came from such a background and for years was intimidated by those very personalities.
There are sections on what constitutes pathological people and what makes a healthy person. There are ideas for changing the dynamics in a controlling relationship and there is advice on what to do "when all else fails." In particular, the narcissist is examined in all of his/her powerful influencing tactics. The process is described as one in which the narcissist lacks empathy for others and as a result, he/she has no qualms about manipulating others, freeloading off others and getting others to do his/her dirty work so that he/she can remain lily white in her/his presentation to others.
There is a wealth of practical advice in this book and it is based upon personal experience and trial-and-error approaches in both personal and religious situations. The author delineates the various strategies of the narcissist and she tells how the narcissist spins tales so as to twist the truth and allow others to feel they may be in the wrong. The slow burn, insult-tracking and eventual meltdown of the disturbed individual is explained in no-nonsense language such that most healthy individuals will begin to recognize the ploys that are intended to ensnare them. I loved the down-to-earth explanations and the practical advice to just stay clear of these disturbed individuals.
