Nameless: The Darkness Comes (The Bone Angel Trilogy, Book One) by Mercedes M. Yardley centers on Luna Masterson, who has had the ability to see demons since she was a child. When her brother’s ex-wife, named Sparkles, who has herself tangled up with a demon, disrupts her family’s life even more, Luna has to put her ability to the ultimate test to protect her loved ones, especially her niece Lydia.
Yardley gives this series an interesting premise. The characterization is good, although the cynical Luna is not easily likable. In fact, some readers might be put off by her abrasive nature. Personally, I find Luna has her own charms, albeit unconventional ones. This anti-heroine, combat boots-wearing female lead has her sarcastic wit and love for her family to bravely fight the demons. That said, I just wish that she had made some wise decisions and listened to her allies who were trying to help and give her important information.
The pacing is great and swift. The plot is satisfactory and has some good, unpredictable surprises that escalate well for readers. I like Yardley’s snappy writing style which deftly balances the witty and horror elements of the story. It'll be interesting to see what will happen next to Luna Masterson, as well as the ‘not-so-demonic’ Mouth. All in all, this is a solid debut for The Bone Angel Trilogy. There’s more shocking truth to be discovered in the gruesome world of the demons and Luna is just getting started.
