Caroline’s father is an archeologist at the University of Arizona. The family recently moved to Arizona from Ohio. Caroline was sad to leave behind her best friend, Polly, and Polly’s brother, Joey. As soon as summer arrived, the friends were visiting at Caroline’s new home, having adventures in archaeological finds and digs. After an adventure in Arizona, Caroline’s father took them to Mexico, where they learned about and explored ancient Mayan archaeological sites. The two girls wandered off in the jungle and managed to get lost in a torrential storm. Seeking refuge in a cave, they discovered some new Mayan finds, which become the most intriguing historical discovery in the area.
Linda Sohner’s Middle-Grade novel, Mysteries of the Ancient Pyramids, is the third book in this series that explores the wonders of history and discovering hidden treasures of the past. Like the previous books in the series, this book doesn’t disappoint. With lots of interesting information about Mayan life, art, and culture, the plot develops with ease, both entertaining and educating the young reader. The young people in the story are cleverly described to create a realistic narrative to which young readers will easily relate. The dialogue is genuine and, although at times detailed in historical information, it flows smoothly, while at the same time being interesting and educational. The author definitely knows Mayan history and has managed to incorporate her knowledge in a story that will captivate young readers. Once again, a very enjoyable read. Looking forward to the next adventure in Caroline and Polly’s exploration of ancient cultures.
