My Uncle Owes Me a Favor is a work of fiction in the family drama, women’s fiction, and slice-of-life subgenres. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Morrigan Milligan. In this compelling and colorful character-based drama, we find ourselves following the exploits of protagonist Maggie Blake, who has her well-balanced life disrupted when a bereavement throws her deep into her Sicilian-Irish family’s roots. Expected to give up everything in order to stay in New York, Maggie resists the family and their demands, yet something calls her deeper into this eclectic mix of weird and wonderful people.
Author Morrigan Milligan has crafted a truly engaging story with plenty of heart, but one that also carries a lot of emotional gravitas, tension, and poignant thinking moments throughout. One of the strongest points of the novel for me is its sense of character and culture, like a glue that holds the story elements together and always keeps things interesting. The varied cast of characters is brought to life with cinematic description and great variance in their dialogue, affording them a nostalgic sense of realism whilst also keeping their surreal, quirky energy. I also enjoyed the pacing of the tale and the balance of cultural pressures, yet there was never a moment where the Italian or Irish elements felt clichéd or overly stereotyped. Overall, My Uncle Owes Me a Favor is a deeply engrossing family drama with plenty of highs and lows, and women’s fiction fans are sure to enjoy it from cover to cover.
