Baking can be so much fun. Messy too as Annie learns when she gets to spend the day at her uncle’s bakery. She loves the sweet-smelling treats her uncle is baking and he even gives her samples to try. But the best fun is when he sits her on the counter and they mix together a batter for a cake. He allows Annie to do the stirring and the batter splashes all over the little girl. But the two share a lot of giggles and a lot of fun. Something Annie’s mother shares with them when she comes to pick up her daughter.
Colleen Baxter Sullivan’s picture book story, My Uncle Joe’s Bakery, is a real treat (no pun intended). The story is written in simple language so a young child can practice their reading skills. The plot develops carefully with lots of fun and giggles between Annie and her uncle, which I’m sure the reader will share as well. Annie gets to watch her uncle bake all kinds of goodies and she is given samples to try, which I’m sure the young reader will wish they could sample as well. The colorful illustrations really make this story, especially the ones depicting the little girl covered in the cake batter. Quality time spent with a family member is certainly something to cherish and Annie is quickly learning how special her uncle is and how much fun she can have at her uncle’s bakery. A compassionate story, sweet in its depiction of a special bond developing between a little girl and her special uncle who owns a bakery.
