My Unbelievable Journey: The Story of an Air Force Air Crewman by Albert Monroe is a captivating and informative military memoir about a flight air crewman's amazing journey as he served his country in the face of danger and uncertainty. His service took him all around the world and tested him in ways he could never imagine. If you're someone who knows little about what the US Air Force does or has never thought about it before, keep reading because it is full of first-hand, behind-the-scenes information that will make you realize just what crewmen have to go through each day to serve, stay alive, and keep others alive.
Besides being about duties as an air force crewman, Monroe gives you the full spectrum of the experience, including the effect on families separated from their loved ones, to give a personal glimpse of what it means to be in "harm's way." We hear that phrase a lot in the media, but you can't really appreciate the full meaning of those words until you hear it from the mouth of one who has lived it. The author also includes details of humanitarian efforts following natural disasters. There are also descriptive passages on joint military exercises and special missions and explanations of weapons, equipment, and how some of them were used. This autobiography serves as a history lesson from someone who's been there, and it's good to have these kinds of personal records: not merely a chapter in a history book or a retrospective in a documentary. One of my favorite parts, and will probably be for other readers, are the descriptions of survival training and what is involved, including how to evade and escape and surviving a plane crash in the ocean. My Unbelievable Journey by Albert Monroe will certainly give you a better understanding and renewed respect for what it means to be in the US Air Force.
