My Race for Life: Finding New Strength After Tragedy is an incredibly inspiring true story written by Alison J. Delgado, MD. Alison starts with a harrowing prologue, throwing us deep into the traumatic accident that started her tragedy. With that in mind, she goes through the story of her life up to the day of the accident, including her love of marathons, a love that would inspire all around her. She relays the accident and the subsequent medical care she received as they tried to save her life, and how she miraculously recovered from a traumatic brain injury and aneurysm through the love of her friends, family, and husband, as well as her will to live and faith. Not only did she survive, but she successfully became a board-certified pediatrician. It truly tells a remarkable tale of human resilience and strength in the face of fear.
I am amazed at Alison J. Delgado, MD’s inspirational life. She’s encountered and overcome more obstacles than most of us probably have, and even so, she chose to write a book to inspire and help others. I love the book's composition, as she uses descriptive, but not confusing medical terms, as well as informative pictures depicting parts of her story. Her story is inspiring and has a happy ending, but she perfectly captures the pain and emotions of certain aspects of her accident and recovery that had me wiping away some tears. My Race for Life is a must-read for anyone going through a tough time and looking for a motivational and encouraging memoir.
