Thomas Wermuth tells the story of his life in My Imaginary Friend: An Autobiography. Thomas describes his life as a child and the sort of relationship he had with his parents. While he had beautiful memories of his father, his relationship with his mother was not that rosy. These conflicts had an impact on his later life. He took us through his time in school, dealing with bullying, his intimate relationships, and coming out as gay. Thomas used his imagination to create Rankso, a make-believe character that he used to escape from his real-life challenges as a child. More remarkable is the fact that the reader is a party to his intimate thoughts coming into play in this book.
My Imaginary Friend is an awesome book where we follow Thomas Wermuth’s journey through life as related in his old age. I loved the way the author talks about every character in his life objectively, with no room for hate or resentment. The reader is kept enthralled as Thomas writes as if he is talking to them directly. There are so many lessons to be learned, especially about parents and their relationships with their children. The decision by the author to include his innermost thoughts is a bold step whose significance can only be appreciated when you read the book. I enjoyed this autobiography because it is straight to the point, interesting, and educational.
