My Dream, America by Helen Munday is a recounting of Helen’s life as a youngster and how she dreamed of some day visiting America. Somehow this notion instilled itself in her mind from an early age, and stayed with her until she was able to go through with it. Having grown up in the United States, I found this book provided me with a unique perspective. Here is someone who has dreamed of visiting a place I was born in, having adventures in some places I’ve been to, and seeing it with the eyes of an outsider. Some things I expected to happen actually happened, but other things were different. I wonder how many people would rescue a marine mammal by putting it in the back seat of their car, and stopping several times a day to let it swim around in the water. Or who would just jump into a snake infested lake without asking if it was safe?
Helen Munday is obviously the adventurous sort, and My Dream, America includes both good adventures and bad. The ones where people were more than happy to help her, as well as the times when she barely had enough money to buy food. I think I would have enjoyed it more if the author had slowed down and developed it better, and added more details, instead of rapidly skipping to other topics. However, in all this is a pleasant read, providing an excellent perspective of the United States from an outsider’s viewpoint.
