Melissa Sprouse Browne's My Best Friend is a Liar: The Real Life Story of a World Class Con Artist is a riveting true story about a woman named Sharon Johnson who is a sociopath and a pathological liar - one of those people whom many of us have encountered in their lives. She's slick, convincing, truly a world class con artist, and so sincere that you can't help but find her believable. What is amazing about the story is the way Browne tells it. Knowing it's nonfiction, it's clearly one of those, "This stuff is too hard to make up," stories.
Johnson is an expert at telling unbelievable stories that are so unbelievable they are believable, and that's what makes this book so thrilling. Sometimes I wanted to shout out, "No, Melissa, she's lying!" What's really compelling about the story is that Johnson is so slick she actually pulls her schemes off quite well, and with many famous people including Tyler Perry, Whitney Houston's mother, Fantasia Barrino, and others who are none too wise to Johnson's antics. Browne does offer advice on how to spot a con artist and not fall victim, which is an added bonus. Browne moves the story along and her talent as a writer shines through; she did a wonderful job at untangling such a convoluted tale. I highly recommend this engaging book and Browne's telling of this true-life story will not disappoint.
