In My Best Friend and I by Brenda Callahan, readers learn that a tiger and a panda are best friends. One’s a girl, the other’s a boy, but that doesn’t matter. “He’s my type of guy, and I’m his type of girl, so we will continue to grow strong as friends.” They look decidedly different, the colors are unique and one walks on four legs while the other walks on two (well, most of the time). They still walk side by side in all kinds of weather, in all kinds of moods. They don’t care about their differences. They’re there for each other in good times and in bad times. It might be stormy outside; they might be caught in a thunderstorm with lightning flashing all around them, but they’re always together because that’s where friends should be - together. They resolve to remain friends because their love is that close.

Brenda Callahan’s picture book, My Best Friend and I, is a simple story about friendship. The language is uncomplicated and will appeal to the young reader just learning to read. The concepts are simple, too, allowing the young reader to relate to the power of friendship and the importance of equity and inclusion, the importance to look beyond one’s differences. The illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful and certainly carry the story along. The author has created a compelling and engaging story that teaches young readers the basic concept of what it means to have a great friend and how important friendships can be, despite their differences. After all, isn’t it the differences that make us all stronger? This is a little gem of a book that will empower the next generation into accepting others for who they are deep down, not for what they look like or how they do things. Beautiful!
