EXCELLENT READ!

Here is a story of epic proportions that begins in 1850’s Prussia and ends up in Kansas. It’s a case where the truth is stranger than fiction. Most books I read these days sacrifice proficiency and elegance in writing style for the story. This author has merged the absolute best of both in a tale that traces the personification of pure evil through three insane generations of men.

There must have been an enormous amount of research that went into piecing this work together. To have done it so seamlessly is amazing and a tribute to a gifted author.

It was very well-paced and thoroughly engaging. I have a daughter myself, and I couldn't help but feel hatred toward these men. Completely self-absorbed, they left a trail of horrendous tragedy and pain in their wake. It’s a timeless must-read for all!

ENGROSSING FROM BEGINNING TO END! NEEDED A SIXTH STAR, BUT COULDN'T FIND ONE!

The opening page of Donalie Beltran's book grabbed my attention, and as I turned the pages, the gooseflesh on my body kept growing. Throughout the book, I had to keep reminding myself that I was reading a non-fiction story. Just when I thought I couldn't get more shocked or horrified, the last chapter blew me out of my seat!

I slipped Donalie's book among the books in one of my many bookshelves and spent the next several hours re-cleaning my clean rifles and pistols and checking to see that all of my containers of gunpowder were dry.

Donalie Beltran's book "Murder Is A Family Affair" is a 'must read' for those who love the genres of history, non-fiction, horror, and true crime stories.

MURDER IS A FAMILY AFFAIR IS A GREAT BOOK!

I just finished reading Murder Is A Family Affair (MIAFA) for the second time. The first time, I couldn't put it down. I read fast because it was such an unbelievable read. I had to revisit it a second time, because I was both incredulous and intrigued. How could generations of evil men like this exist? I have always had difficulty believing one carries a murder-curelty gene. I never believed one could be born to be a cold-blooded murderer. Ms Beltran has totally changed my mind. It can happen. One can be born to be a ruthless murderer.

Ms Beltran possesses the great gift of capturing one's attention, and holding one's attention. The title sucked me in; and as I read the cover, I became more intrigued. As I delved into the book, I reread sentences. She shocked me with her descriptive narrative. She brilliantly described the horrifyingly cruel character and actions of these evil men. She also did her homework, because her account of history is accurate. I need the history to make sense, and she accomplishes this expertly.

I admire this writer's bravery and courage. It must have been both difficult and painful for her to expose her family's horrifying secret. I am sure she encountered many obstacles. She must have have been met with protests from other family members for revealing this horridly sinister story abut their family. It must have been painful and difficult for her to discover, research, and accept this ghastly reality. I think she must be one courageous lady.

One can create interesting fiction; but, I like reality. The fact that this was a true story made it all the more fascinating to me.

After reading MIAFA, I find myself still thinking and wondering about those men. I now believe some human beings actually are born with the gene to kill.

I don't think one can ever really put down a good book. It remains with them. Murder Is A Family Affair is one of those books. I look forward to reading more from this brilliant author.

A BOOK LIKE NO OTHER I HAVE EVER READ!

In Murder Is A Family Affair, the horror that runs through this family tree's branches is unparalleled only to the evil that feeds it. Donalie Beltran captures real facts from her own genealogy that entices the reader to desperately know more.

The harrowing revelation spans generations - their lives, their deaths, and their unanswered questions. What an extremely artistic job by Ms. Beltran which kept my heart racing, breaking, and spellbound to the very last page!

COULDN’T PUT THE BOOK DOWN!

I am related to the Tuxhorns and needed to read it. Although much of it may be speculation, it was a thrilling read and I want to read it again. Donalie has a wonderful imagination and it could very well have happened as she wrote it, or at least very close.

ONLY 5 STARS!

I only left five stars because I couldn't leave more. I know it's been said before, but I honestly could not put this book down. I bought it to read on a long flight. I left the frozen plains of Kansas for sunny LA, but when I got there I couldn't think about anything else but this book. I just had to finish it!

Now, I've got to know what happened to the rest of that family. Waiting...waiting... waiting! We need another book Donalie!

This book is very well written, easy to read, and TRUE.

DARK FAMILY SAGA

"Murder Is A Family Affair" by Donalie Beltran is a gripping family saga somewhere in the twilight between fact and fiction. It is based on some real people but is told with a strong narrative that owes more to a crime mystery or psychological drama. The story starts with August Tuxhorn at the death of his father in Germany in the 1850s. As he is leaving Prussia behind for a better life in America we soon learn that he has inherited his father's grim and mean nature.

The book follows the family history as it passes through several cities and villages in the US, e.g. New Orleans and Peru, Illinois. With great characterization Beltran brings her ancestors to life and we witness as the family legacies are being passed on from generation to generation.

Being German myself I found the opening passages set there particularly well done but the descriptions of farm life and immigration also were of special interest to me. Details, such as banking customs and the clothes worn were further strong points in this novel/ chronicle. The book was recommended to me by a good friend but I had no idea I would enjoy it this much.

Very accomplished.

GRIPPING…A REAL PAGE TURNER FROM BEGINNING TO END!

The amount of heartache and hardship the families endure at the hands of these evil men throughout their lives is almost unbearable.

Murder is a Family Affair is a book that a great many people are going to admire, and that few people will be able to read without being moved. This is a great read for anyone who enjoys True Crime. They won't be disappointed.

A TAUT NAIL BITER

Beltran grabs the reader by the scruff of the neck and holds them until the very last page. Murder is a Family Affair is the true story of three male generations of the Tuxhorn family. The amount of pain and suffering they inflict on their families is gut-wrenching. I always believed true evil only existed in fiction. Beltran opened my eyes to the reality of evil being passed onto each generation is possible.

CAN’T PUT IT DOWN!

I felt this was a very sad story. But on the other hand it made me appreciate the life i've had. It made me appreciate my parents and all the folks in my family. I can not comprehend abusive people.

I love the way it was written, the way it unfolded. It captivates you throughout.

Good history...family related. Excellent reading. Extremely interesting and quite a learning experience. Some facts are not quite actual, but all in all, a great book.

FASCINATING PART OF AMERICAN HISTORY

I have to start off by saying that I’m a nineteenth century history buff, and so I took to this book instantly. Murder is a Family Affair tells the harrowing story of three generations of the Tuxhorn family, the patriarchs of which apparently suffered from mental illness. The tale begins in Prussia, then moves to New Orleans, Illinois and eventually to Kansas. While relating these fascinating tales, the stories are interwoven with major historical events, including the Civil War.

What struck me most was that when I finished, I discovered the stories were true. Instantly, my mind raced back to the tragedies these families experienced, and I felt the pain of the spouses and children who suffered under the hands of their tyrant fathers. This book gives a real sense of what it would be like to live in an abusive family.

I would definitely recommend this book. It reveals a piece of American history that deserves to be told. The book is well written, fast paced and page turning. Three days later, I still find myself thinking about these stories, and hoping they will never be repeated.

A TRUE STORY THAT HOLDS YOUR ATTENTION TO THE LAST PAGE!

I have just read this book, I would highly recommend for everyone. In fact, this is my about my Grandmother Tuxhorn's family and I had heard stories, but did not know what and who committed the crimes.

Now Donalie the author has set that rumor straight. She has done a beautiful job telling the story of such a horrific part of our past. Since we share this heritage I can strongly reccommend this to all who are related and even those who are not and like a good true story.

Most people's search for ancestors ends with stories that hold little interest for anyone else, but Donalie Beltran has uncovered a family history that will keep you rapt until the end. She narrates the lives of three generations of good-looking men with cold hearts, and the misery they caused those closest to them in a time when women and children were considered "property".

The writing is clean and flows naturally through this tale that begins in the 1850's and ends in the 20th century. And all is not unrelieved horror; there are moments of love and tenderness as well as illuminating details about pioneer and farming life in the American Midwest.

Murder Is A Family Affair is well worth reading. I wish Donalie had been able to include more photos, but that's a minor quibble.

THE ONLY THING I DIDN’T LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK…

…Is the title. This book is about so much more than murder. It is about the effects of pathology on families and communities. This was a very well written book, and an intriguing story.

I was so excited to get this book. The first chapter gets you hooked and you don't want to put the book down.

I couldn't wait to get to the next chapter. After about 3 weeks or so I have started reading this book again for the 2nd time and I have NEVER read a book twice. I'm ready to read the next book she comes out with.

POWERFUL!

If you have a heart, brace it before entering into this provocative and emotionally captivating story.

MURDER IS A FAMILY AFFAIR is a masterfully written book, catapulting readers into the shadowy world of domestic violence, crossing continents and counties, states and laws, households and generations. Beltran ploughs through social taboos requiring polite public silence about such family affairs, and delivers a closeup look at the price of such silence. She offers her own family, as evidence.

She never asks readers to care, but she also DOES do a fine job of showing why you should. NOT CARING becomes the prime directive in an abuser's belief system. NOT CARING is used to justify everything wrong, including the chance for society to politely turn away, leaving untold women and children to have to live under abuse, murder and worse.

Even when readers travel from the first seed of violence through multiple generations of abuse, the author's calm and apparent kindness brings a sense quiet support as we view, with her, her horrific family history.

Interesting reading about my very own ancestors that I had heard only rumors about before. Now a better idea what happened.

THERE WON’T BE A SEQUEL

This is a story about my great-great-grandfather's older brother, my great-great-great grandfather and his father. I read it for that reason. Having read it, I am willing to say that this book would be an entertaining read for anyone who reads it.

I think it's very well written. Just as I am skeptical about how factual and true the news on TV is, I am skeptical about how much of this story is "true". Before reading the book, I had read the newspaper clippings Donalie had found and shared with her parents who shared with my parents. Anyone who read those newspaper accounts was forced to wonder what on Earth could make these men behave as they did.

Donalie has given us an answer. Whether it's the right answer, we will never know, but it's a good answer. While there may be some details created by this author to make a believable explanation, the fact of the matter remains that the last acts of August and Charles were real.

Thank you for clearing up many tales. I live in Inman, Kansas and have only heard some of the story. To tell you the truth most people who live here have never heard of what happened. Some won't admit it happened here.

My husband & I took care of the cemetery when your Dad was looking for the grave sites and it is so nice to now have stones for the graves. It was a really good book and an easy read (read it in 2 days). Again, thank you for such a good book.

MURDER IS A FAMILY AFFAIR

The first pages skillfully set the dark mood of the story, with a smooth, flowing narrative, which transports the reader from Europe to the United States. The reader is quickly drawn into the protagonist/antagonist's lives, persons filled with pain and anger that passes from father to son and on through the descendants.

Her adept manner of providing back-story between snatches of the funeral lethargies, adds pathos and details necessary to propel it toward its chilling conclusion. Ms. Beltran writes, not judging, only stating the facts, letting the reader draw his or her own conclusions about the characters. I could not put the book down until I turned and read the last page and was ready to reread it.

Readers interested in murder mysteries, human psychology, a look into 19th century immigrant history and a darned good story should find this fascinating.

THIS BOOK GAVE ME CHILLS!

Murder Is A Family Affair by Donalie Beltran actually gave me chills.

The fact that it’s a true story really made me wonder about my own family tree. No doubt, it’s very different from the books I’m accustomed to reading. I mostly read about magic and the paranormal, but MIAFA got me hooked from the very first page. You can easily tell if a book is good or not by reading the first few lines. I instantly knew that what I was reading was going to be a splendid experience.

The story opens with a funeral: The funeral of Henry Tuxhorn and the author does an amazing job explaining about the characters and August Tuxhorn. August is the person we get to know more about in the coming chapters, and it’s not pleasant. You try to feel sorry for him, considering what his father, Henry, did, but it’s hard. August is not a character you can feel sorry for. It seems that the evil runs in his blood and I guess that’s what the author is trying to tell us. It’s really weird to see how August, one who hated his father, slowly turns into the person he detests. We see the transformation unfold as the story progresses and trust me; you too will feel sorry for the characters that cross his path. Just when you think it’s all over, Charles, August’s son comes into the picture….shivers!

I really liked how the author treated the father-son dynamics. Not only that, the female characters especially Elizabeth, deserve a mention as well. I enjoyed Elizabeth’s character. I feel for her and can understand her actions because of the experiences she went through. The character that took me by surprise was Charles’s wife, fondly called Nettie by him. Can such a woman really exist? There are also other things touched upon. Such as the things women had to face back in the 1850’s, even in America. Women were helpless at that time. John Friesen’s character was a pleasant surprise, trying to make up for his daughter’s wrongs. Charles and Nettie seem to be ‘perfect’ for each other, but I was glad to see that end: birds of a feather do flock together, even they both are crazy.

I actually let out a breath of relief during the Epilogue once the fate of the other Tuxhorn kids was revealed. At least some of them got the freedom they deserved.

MIAFA is one of those stories that leave you with a peculiar feeling. You will feel glad to have read the story, but uncomfortable because the end didn’t feel ‘complete’….remember the film ‘No Country for Old Men’? Or the Goosebumps series? Not uncomfortable in a bad way, but just an uneasy feeling regarding what you just read and how all of this was actually true!

A CHILLING TRUE STORY!

This tale of intergenerational violence and abuse is both fascinating and heartbreaking. A true historical account, the book uses techniques common to fiction--dialogue and suspense--to let the reader experience events as they unfold. It is hard to imagine how a strain of narcissistic personality could escape punishment for so many years, but this becomes all too believable as Beltran presents the details.

I would recommend this book to all admirers of true crime and those fans of historical fiction who favor a dark storyline. My only reservation is that I would have liked more background on how the crimes came to light and how the research was conducted.

KEPT ME HOOKED FROM THE FIRST PAGE TO THE LAST!

Wow! What a story. What is so unbelievable is that it is true. Not often do I find a book with which I fight sleep to keep reading.

SHOULD BE A BEST SELLER!

It has been a long time since I read a book twice but this is one of those books that I just couldn't get enough of. I finished it and then a couple of days later I picked it up and read it again.

Donalie, you really outdid yourself this time. I found this book exciting, fast moving, spellbinding, and extremely well written. I can hardly wait until your next book comes out.

QUITE A FAMILY TREE.

Donalie Beltran’s book, Murder Is A Family Affair, blew me away. Even forgetting that this story is based on this author’s very own family tree, it is a great horror story nevertheless.

Modeling behaviors has long been a reason for a child’s development, good or bad. That’s a given. So abuse is said to be handed down from parent to child. Taking abuse to incredible levels and watching it be passed along makes a very compelling plot. Violence and abuse begets violence and abuse. Factor that along and a psychopath/sociopath begets bigger and better psychopaths and sociopaths.

Beltran’s book draws real characters from her research and brings them to life. The writing is straightforward and pulls no punches. Fleshed-out through the points of view of these evil men gives this book a twisted rationality that kept me turning pages. I won’t issue any spoilers, but the ending really creeped me out.

I can honestly recommend this book.

MAGNIFICENT STORY: CAPTIVATING, RIVETING, AND MASTERFULLY DONE

One of the best works I have ever read. I couldn't stop reading it. I was enamored by Donalie's use of English from the start. She really knows how to construct sentences. Her storytelling is absolutely superb. She is an inspiration to me. I am honored to have read her book. I am grateful for meeting her. She is a class act. I can't wait to read more of her works in the future.

AN HONEST AND REVEALING TALE OF FAMILY EVIL

Donalie, this book was an amazing account of how human evil doesn't need a supernatural explanation. It existed in the Tuxhorn men--not because something from outside made them evil but because of all that was absent from their own hearts and minds.

It was definitely a page-turner, and I would be inclined to acquire everything you write or have written! My fingers itched to tweak now and then, but that's the editor in me. The same thing happens when I read my own work. Love you, girl!

EVIL INCARNATE: THE CASE OF NATURE VS. NURTURE

Serial killers. We abhor them, ache for their victims, pity their relatives. In Donalie Beltran’s fascinating book, Murder Is a Family Affair, we find out that these types of murderers existed long before Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer.

Indeed, the author’s adopted ancestor Henry Tuxhorn, who, during the mid 1800’s wreaked havoc on his family, was just the beginning of this horrific tale. Amongst his brood of children was August, whose similar proclivities went one step further.

Next is August as a grown-up, with mostly normal children, with one exception: Charles. With a mixture of alcoholism, mood swings, sociopathic lies, unbelievably brutal chauvinism, we slowly learn how Charles becomes the most vicious of them all. By mid book, I realized there were a couple of very important lessons I was learning: 1) when families are so abused, their fractured egos make them incapable of even trying to escape, and 2) evil very well may be as easily inherited as blue eyes or diabetes.

Not a lightweight beach/summer novel, this page-turning book is, nonetheless, a highly recommended read!!

A COURAGEOUS BOOK

There's a scene in the movie Chariots of Fire in which one of the leads is in a quarter mile footrace. He's knocked to the ground by another runner, but he gets up and through a magnificent and courageous effort wins the race before collapsing in exhaustion. A coach lifts him up and says, "It's not the prettiest race I've ever seen; certainly the bravest." MURDER IS A FAMILY AFFAIR isn't the prettiest book I've ever read, but it's certainly the bravest.

Donalie Beltran tells a sprawling story, a true family history, that courageously explores a dark side of that family. It is a brutally honest, fast-paced book that will break your heart, have you pounding your fist in anger, and shaking your head in shock. Once you pick it up you will not be able to put it down.

I think the story was written very well, kept it interesting throughout the entire book. I read it in two days. Ms. Beltran made you wonder how much of that actually went on in many of the early immigrant families. Recommend it anyone who enjoys mystery, and lineage stories

GETS BETTER THE FURTHER YOU GET INTO IT!

This book starts out interesting and ends up fascinating. Donalie Beltran does a great job of portraying the sheer evil that ran through the veins of Henry Tuxhorn, his son August, and August’s son Charles. The crimes these men committed, and the misery they brought to all those who were unfortunate enough to live in their vicinity are incredible – yet historically true.

The book is low-key, without melodrama or gory detail, but Ms. Beltran is able to effectively convey the horror passed down through three generations. I just hope there will be a sequel in years to come so we can see if the evil continues.

“Do you have a murderer in your family tree? I do. More than one.” So begins the teaser on the cover of Donalie Beltran’s Murder Is a Family Affair.

The thing is, she isn’t kidding. Old hate-filled, knuckle-scarred Henry Tuxhorn’s coffin is lighter and shorter than usual because Henry’s head is scattered all over a Prussian field. Do we hear a sobbing goodbye from son August at Henry’s funeral? Hardly. He strokes his moustache to hide the smile on his face. Whatever demons old Henry harbored, pitchfork- twirling August harbors more. But it doesn’t end there.

The Tuxhorn reign of Devil-possessed hatred, violence, paranoia, and sadism is passed from generation to generation through males who commit unspeakable acts, spontaneously and conspiratorially. And, although it’s her own family, Ms. Beltran doesn’t hold back.

Beltran’s style is refreshing: She narrates in short, declarative sentences that move the story at just the right pace in a warm, personal way. Murder Is a Family Affair is True Crime at its best… and the “True” part is the scary part.

COMPELLING STORY TELLING

Although the subject matter of this book is disturbing, the story telling is compelling! I couldn't put the book down. Ms. Beltran obviously did much research for the story. It's well written and I agree with other reviewers, well edited.

True crime is my favorite genre, and this is one of the best books I've read in a while. If you know someone who enjoys stories based on actual events, I highly recommend this book.

EVIL CAN BE INHERITED, AND IT WILL BE MUCH MORE VICIOUS!

A grisly tale told with love in the tender prose of debut author, Donalie Beltran, is an anomaly I did not expect as I read Murder is a Family Affair, but that is what this talented and original author delivers. I highly recommend this novel which has earned Five Stars.

The story spans three generations of the Tuxhorn clan, beginning in the mid-nineteenth century with Henry Tuxhorn’s funeral in Prussia, his son, August fleeing the corrupt Prussian government, and the oppressive Catholic Church, August brought his angry violent nature to the new land and made it a tool to his success and subsequent suicide. Henry’s grandson, Charles is the primary focus of this mystery. He is the final inheritor of the evil hatred and brutal Tuxhorn curse.

The Tuxhorn’s are psychopathic killers and thieves, devoid of the love they never received in childhood. Totally amoral and deliberately cruel, they leave a trail of viciousness across the mid-west and into the twentieth century. The wicked Tuxhorn crimes are shocking, but Beltran’s writing unfolds the evil actions with an understanding worthy of a Freudian scholar.

Beltran has accumulated extensively researched facts about the Tuxhorn family as well as their victims, family members, neighbors, and townsfolk. She describes the houses architecture, furnishings, and buildings in the towns from her research efforts. Beltran knits her found facts together with a bridge of narrative and intelligent dialog that create images in the readers mind like a faded sepia daguerreotype.

The author develops her characters thoroughly so that the reader feels that she is reading about a person known well. Good writing demands that the pace of the story keeps the reader “hooked” throughout, and Murder is a Family Affair does not disappoint. From the opening paragraph through to page 308, a reader will turn each page, eager to see what comes next! The author has left us a clue to the content on the back cover of the book. I received an Advance Review Copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for this honest review. The Beltran clue that grabbed me when I read it is:

NOT MY USUAL KIND OF BOOK, BUT WOW!

When I received a free preview copy of this book (no obligation to be anything but truthful), I wasn't sure what to expect. The subject matter was definitely an unpleasant prospect, but I knew how much effort the author had put into making this book not just an honest look at this aspect of her family background, but a good read. My only criticism is that the editing wasn't as tight as I would've preferred, but that would probably only bother another writer.

At first, I expected that I'd read a few pages of this book each day. I never expected to get so drawn into it that I would end up finishing it in just a couple of days. As someone who normally reads only novels, I kept watching the men in this family getting worse and worse and knowing they would never change. So instead I kept turning pages to see how they could get worse than they'd been before.

I don't go for a lot of gore, and I appreciate the author's kindness in not describing the worst of it. I also appreciate the fact that--in spite of the kind of people she was depicting--she didn't resort to what I (and many other readers) would consider undesirable language.

One thing that fascinated me about the way this was written was I didn't feel like I was reading the same things over and over. Each new generation's evil man was his own person, in spite of similarities in action to his father.

This book probably isn't for just anyone, but I would especially recommend it for anyone who has experienced (or is especially concerned about) child and spouse abuse.

AN ABSOLUTE TIMELESS MASTERPIECE - I LOVED EVERY PAGE!

What can I say? Wow! And I mean - WOW! What a book! What a story! In addition to that, the fact that it's a true story makes it all the more terrifying and amazing!

First and foremost, this tale is beautifully written and well edited, as well as formatted. It's definitely the best indie book I've read so far, and if you ask me, it needs to be traditionally published! Are you reading this agents and publishers? Read this book and publish it, it's so much better than at least 30 percent of the books I've read from big publishing houses! I mean it was actually interesting! Really interesting! I've read so many books where I at times had to push on to get to the best parts, but I cannot say I've done the same with this one! It did not drag at all!

Henry, August and then Charles...The innate evil these men shared, the bitter ends they met and the mixture of rage and anger these people embodied hurt so many souls and spoiled so many lives! I hate them all, yet I love their story! I am actually wholeheartedly recommending this to my friends as I write this! Seriously, I was so very impressed!

This is a sad story, but beautifully so. I don't imagine books get any better than this work of genius.

This is a well-written book that will capture your attention and not let it go. I read the book in two days, staying up late at night and into the next day; because I kept getting drawn into the drama and wanting to see what happened next. What more can you ask from a book?

You hear and see stories about the terrible things people do all the time in the media. But you never get the full story. This true crime story is particularly fascinating, especially within the context of inherited evil.

I definitely recommend that you get the book and find out for yourself what a good read it is!
