Motherlines: Love, Longing, and Liberation by Patricia Reis is a thought provoking memoir that speaks about spiritual life; a spiritual life that does not revolve around prayer, meditation, or a religious path, but around sex with men and women, illegal abortion, marriage, divorce, abandonment, betrayal, obsessions with food, money, and body, and parents. This is the story of an ordinary woman, her trials and tribulations, ordeals, struggles, someone that is dependent on the love of others who encourage her possibilities. The author speaks about the influence of Aunt Ruth, a nun who plays an important role in her life and who acts as a motherline and spirit guide, and gives her unending support during her bad phase and guides her through her transformation and spiritual learning.
The memoir throws light on the author’s life through the letters exchanged between her and Aunt Ruth, and also takes readers back to the 1980s. The pain, joy, despair, frustration, excitement, courage, and strength of Patricia Reis are palpable as one turns the pages of this memoir. The author’s spiritual journey is insightful and inspirational and she is very open and honest about her experiences and the struggles in her life. These two fascinating women, Patricia and Ruth, and their spiritual journey make the memoir a compelling read. It is a memoir about transformation, spiritual awakening, acceptance, self-knowledge, and self-discovery. The book is well written with many layers to it, and that makes it a good read. The story is interesting and invites readers to open up a deep and new perspective on life and living.
