Moon Path is a work of historical fiction set during the years of the Second World War, penned by author Steven Greenberg. Brothers Aron and Samuel Katz take the lead roles in this far-reaching narrative that spreads across war-torn Europe in 1942, focusing on the lives of the Jewish people and the power of fraternal love in surviving one of the world’s largest atrocities. Set among the lesser known experiences of the people of Palestine, Iran, and the surrounds during the Second World War, this story sees younger brother Samuel cast out to the Arctic in a Soviet Gulag. As Aron deals with Palestine’s own pre-invasion preparations, he has to make a choice about his brother’s future and his own involvement with it.
The intricacy of detail and research in author Steven Greenberg’s work makes his novel feel like both a reading and learning experience at the same time. The commitment to character development is so strong that it’s easy to forget that Samuel and Aron are fictional, for the struggles they go through reflect the real lives of so many people living all across Europe at the time of the Second World War. The plot is well paced to reveal the chain of events in both their lives, and their fraternal connection sees them through hardships, but is also put to the most extreme tests that human cruelty can throw at them. Overall, Moon Path is a superbly atmospheric work of historical fiction with characters that, once met, are never forgotten.
