Author Mark Adam Kaplan’s Monsters Grow Up is a children’s book about the ins and outs of monsters' lives. Each page is dedicated to an illustration, created expertly by Glenn Scano. Each image is, for the most part, unique to the one before it, aside from the exception of two illustrations or so. The illustrations are vibrant and have a charming quality that will make you giggle even before you see the words below. However, the words make the illustration even more hilarious.
Mark Adam Kaplan’s Monsters Grow Up had me laughing to myself several times, which is hard to make me do. I consider myself to be a connoisseur when it comes to humor. There were many gems that I would like to leave as my quote here, but this one is probably my favorite: on page forty-nine “Some of them hate their jobs” and the illustration is a monster under the bed with his hands over his ears as two kids jump on the same bed he’s hiding under.
Illustrator Glenn Scano completely won me over with his illustrations. Not only was this book funny, but for kids who are afraid of what might be lurking in closets and under beds, these images bring a humor to the story that might help defuse some of the fear that kids might be experiencing in their rooms when it’s time to go to bed. I think I appreciate that even more than the humor aspect of it, having been a child and now an adult who is still, at times, afraid at night. If your little one is afraid of monsters, I would definitely consider buying this book. It’s a win-win for you and your child.
