Bedtime for children is often filled with excuses in the attempt to avoid the inevitable: going to bed and going to sleep for the night. Monkey Bandit is no different. He wants to finish building a castle, or finish drawing circles – anything to avoid going to bed. But when called to see the monkey in the moon, Monkey Bandit is so intrigued that he forgets all of those things he thinks he wants to do as he’s tucked into his bed and looks through his window at the full moon, trying to see the monkey in the moon. The intense concentration is enough to make Monkey Bandit so drowsy that he falls asleep, dreaming of the monkey in the moon chasing butterflies.
Maria Ellis’s picture book story, Monkey Bandit and the Monkey in the Moon, is a fun way to encourage the very young to crawl into bed and fall asleep. There may or may not be a monkey in the moon, but the very idea can certainly spark some creative ideas to nurture children’s dreams. This story is beautifully illustrated and charmingly told. It will certainly be a favorite to both little children and the adults who read to them. The discussion between child and adult reader has the potential to open up many educational and fun ideas, from the wonders of the night sky to chasing butterflies and much more. It will help spark the imagination and perhaps a few fun-filled dreams as well. An enjoyable story for young and old alike. Well done!
